These Mass. communities had the most at stake in the ‘millionaires tax’ case

The Supreme Judicial Court’s ruling Monday to reject the so-called “millionaires tax” ballot question will be particularly welcome news in pockets of the state with high concentrations of residents who earn more than $1 million a year.

Expect there to be plenty of rejoicing in places like Weston, Dover, and Wellesley, which have had the greatest per-capita clusters of million-dollar earners in recent years, state data show.

Overall, more than 15,900 residents statewide reported an adjusted gross income of more than $1 million in the 2015 tax year, the most recent year for which data is available. (Remember, we’re talking about income that exceeds $1 million, not assets.)

Put another way, that means about two in every thousand Massachusetts residents earned $1 million or more that year.

But in certain communities, the ratio was much higher.

Weston had the highest proportion of million-dollar earners, about 46 per 1,000 residents, followed by Dover (37), Wellesley (30), Manchester (21), and Lincoln (19).

In terms of raw numbers, Boston had the most million-dollar earners with 2,131, followed by Newton (1,276), Wellesley (864), Weston (548), and Brookline (490).

How many million-dollar earners live in your hometown? Check out the maps and table below to find out.

It’s important to note that gross income includes money individuals take home from a wide range of sources, including: wages and salaries, interest, royalties, dividends, pensions, rent collection, and alimony and life insurance payouts. It excludes income from some sources, such as gifts and inheritances.

To calculate adjusted gross income, certain deductions are subtracted from an individual’s gross income.

This table shows the figures behind the two maps above.
