Lowell man dies from injuries in Chelmsford motorcycle crash

A Lowell man who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in Chelmsford has died, officials announced Wednesday.

On Tuesday around 7:20 p.m., Gerald Barnes, 21, collided with an SUV and sustained life-threatening injuries, officials said. The crash happened at the intersection of Acton Road and High Street.

Barnes’ Honda motorcycle was destroyed in the crash, police Lieutenant Gary Hannagan said on Tuesday.

The Mazda SUV also sustained “pretty heavy damage,” Hannagan said. The driver, a 41-year-old Chelmsford man, was examined at the scene but was not injured.

The motorcyclist was taken to Lowell General Hospital, police said before Barnes was identified. He later died at the hospital, according to a Wednesday statement from the Middlesex district attorney’s office.

Barnes was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash, according to Hannagan.

No charges have been filed in connection to the incident as of Wednesday night, according to prosecutors.

An investigation is ongoing.
