Recent bird sightings as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society:

Last week’s highlight was a brown pelican at Eel Point on Nantucket, which also hosted a yellow-crowned night-heron. A continuing snowy owl was also spotted at various locations on the island, a rarity this late in the summer.

► Plum Island: At Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, there was an American avocet in the marsh across from parking lot 1. Also spotted on the island were six common loons, two American golden-plovers, two roseate terns, and a seaside sparrow.

► Plymouth: Two chuck-will’s-widows were spotted. A larger relative of the whip-poor-will, the chuck-will’s-widow is a summer visitor to a small number of sites in Plymouth County and on Cape Cod.

► Miscellaneous: Sightings included two northern goshawks at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Sudbury and two acadian flycatchers on Blossom Road in Fall River.
