A manhole fire in the North End led to a widespread power outage for several hours on Sunday night, officials said.
The Boston Fire Department responded to the blaze at 24 Cooper St., near the intersection with North Margin Street, shortly before 10 p.m., Boston fire spokesman Marc Sanders said. Firefighters extinguished the flames quickly, he said.
The estimated repair time for the manhole is “unknown,” Sanders said.
The power outage, which began around 10 p.m., lasted for about six hours and affected around 600 Eversource customers, according to the energy provider.
“We’re often able to reroute power around the damaged equipment to quickly restore it to many of the affected customers,” Eversource spokesman Michael Durand said. “We were unable to do that in this case.”
