Gunshot that hit Topsfield woman came from outside home

The person who shot a woman inside a Topsfield home this weekend fired the bullet from outside, police said on Sunday.

The 64-year-old woman is expected to recover, according to State Police spokesman Paul Sullivan. On Saturday, she was struck in the chest and seriously injured.

The shooting was “random,” Sullivan said. No information on the suspect was available Sunday evening.

The woman was visiting a family member at the time. The family member was home but is not a suspect, according to Sullivan.

The incident remains under investigation.

Topsfield police officials said they were unable to comment Sunday evening.
