As intense thunderstorms rolled through New Hampshire Friday, the Hopkinton Town Library caught on fire, officials said.
Firefighters responded at about 4:45 p.m. to an alarm at 61 Houston Drive, the Hopkinton Fire Department said in a Facebook post.
Firefighters found light smoke coming from the library’s cupola when they arrived, the post said.
A second alarm was struck, and firefighters from six other local communities came to help extinguish the fire, officials said.
Photos posted to the department’s Facebook page show extensive damage to the ceiling and floors.
On Facebook, the library thanked the community for its support.
“It’s been a really hard evening, but we are so grateful for the outpouring of support,” the library posted just after 11 p.m. “It will be a slow recovery process, but we will come back stronger than ever.”
