Repair work at the Alewife parking garage has reduced parking by about 500 spaces.

About 500 parking spaces will be closed Thursday at the Alewife parking garage as crews work to repair damage from a piece of concrete that fell on a car.

The delaminated concrete fell onto a customer’s car on the second floor of the garage on Wednesday, and no one was injured, said Lisa Battiston, an MBTA spokeswoman.

“Immediately upon notification, MBTA engineers along with independent engineers conducted an assessment of the garage’s condition,” Battiston wrote in an e-mail. “The engineers’ assessment indicated the garage was safe for use, and also identified the need for limited spot repairs to concrete on the second floor of the garage.”

The entire second floor of the garage will be closed for parking on Thursday as crews complete the repairs, though drivers will be able to access the “path of travel” to reach the rest of the garage, Battiston said.

The garage has a total of about 2,500 parking spaces overall.

“Out of an abundance of caution,” Battiston said, MBTA officials will also assess the other floors of the garage and perform “spot repairs as necessary.”

Battiston said officials are in the process of “developing a long-term plan for the garage,” and they are awarding a $5.7 million contract this week to start any work needed.
