Car chase, then foot pursuit on I-495 ends with arrest of Taunton man
After a wild car chase and a foot pursuit on Interstate 495, police Friday nabbed a fugitive from Taunton who was wanted on gun and drug charges in three incidents in Massachusetts and New Hampshire over the last year, authorities said.
Thomas Holland, 31, was wanted in connection with a shooting in Manchester, N.H., last September, according to a State Police statement.
Holland was also wanted for waving a gun at people on Taunton Green in June, after which he allegedly kicked in the door of an apartment while he was trying to evade arrest, police said.
Last week, Danvers police said an arrest warrant had been issued for Holland after police recovered a large amount of crack cocaine from a motel that he allegedly fled on Aug. 1.
In June, Holland was arrested following the Taunton incident when police found him hiding in a shower in the apartment that he had forced his way into, according to State Police. A clerk set bail at the station, which Holland posted, but he then failed to show up to his arraignment. That triggered troopers from a State Police fugitive apprehension unit to start searching for him. The unit “developed information that led them to establish surveillance today at a hotel in Norton,” according to the State Police statement.
Police saw Holland and a woman, later identified as Brittany Pasternak, of Somerset, in a car in the parking lot of the hotel at 4:45 p.m., police said. Authorities tried to stop the car before Bay Street met Interstate 495 in Taunton. Police, using their vehicles, attempted to box the car in.
The car, which was driven by Pasternak with Holland in the passenger seat, backed into a cruiser as police tried to get to the duo, according to State Police. The car then fled, striking an unmarked police cruiser in the process. Police tried to simultaneously stop traffic on Bay Street to prevent a crash and contain the car Holland was in, according to the State Police statement. Holland’s car drove at another cruiser, and then onto the on-ramp for Interstate 495 southbound, police said.
There, the car weaved and sped through all travel lanes and the breakdown lane, police said. It got off the highway at Route 138, before getting back on 495, police said in the statement.
Holland got out of the car as traffic got thicker near the Route 24 exit, police said. Once out of the car, he ran north on the highway and tried to open doors of vehicles that were stopped in traffic, according to State Police.
Police arrested Holland in the middle lane of 495. He was charged with warrants stemming from the trio of incidents from the past year, as well as resisting arrest and attempted car jacking, according to authorities. He was taken into custody on the day before his 32nd birthday.
Pasternak, the alleged driver of the car during the pursuit, was also arrested. She now faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of property, State Police said.
