Students in Barnstable are getting an extra day of summer vacation.
The first day of school will be postponed from Wednesday to Thursday because of the intense heat, Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown announced Tuesday.
“Due to tomorrow’s projected heat index of 103 degrees, our first day of school is canceled,” Mayo-Brown posted on Facebook. “All previously scheduled Barnstable High School after-school activities, either on or off campus, are also canceled tomorrow.”
“Sorry to disappoint all those looking forward to school tomorrow!” she posted on Twitter. “Stay cool!”
Kindergarten and preschool orientation were also moved to Thursday, and the first day for kindergarteners will be Sept. 4, she said.
On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning that will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday.
