A 48-year-old man drowned in the ocean off Marshfield on Monday, officials said.

Around 4:05 p.m., Marshfield police reported a drowning in the Brant Rock area of Marshfield. The man was found facedown in the water, about 30 yards from a nearby jetty, according to Beth Stone, a spokeswoman for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

The man was taken out of the water by the Marshfield Harbormaster and moved to the area of 100 Central St., where “lifesaving efforts were performed,” Stone said in an e-mail.

The man was then taken to South Shore Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Foul play is not suspected, Stone said.
