Body of woman found in Northampton river identified

The woman whose body was recovered earlier this week from a river in Northampton has been identified as 24-year-old Lucy-Lynn Graves, police said.

Graves, a Northampton resident, was found in Mill River underneath a log near Bottums Road Thursday morning, two days after she was reported missing , Northampton police said in a statement Friday.

Graves was swimming in the river near Pine Street on Tuesday when police were notified of unattended personal items — clothes, car keys, and a towel — sitting by the water.

Officers used the keys to locate a nearby car, where they found more information about the swimmer, the statement said.

“Officers contacted friends of the female and determined that she often swims at that location,” police said.

State and local officials began searching for Graves’s body in the river and the nearby woods Tuesday night. They resumed the search on Wednesday and Thursday, when Graves’s body was found at 11:20 a.m.

“High water levels, downed trees, murky water, and strong currents made the search difficult ... We send our condolences to her family, friends, and associates,” police said in a statement.
