19-year-old killed in overnight Dorchester shooting

A 19-year-old man was killed in an overnight shooting in Dorchester, Boston police said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the area of 12 Vinson St. at about 2:08 a.m. Thursday, where they found the man with a gunshot wound, said Sergeant John Boyle, a Boston police spokesman.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting marks the 45th homicide of the year in Boston, police said, slightly ahead of the city’s homicide rate at the same time last year. Last year at this time, there had been 42 homicides citywide.

No arrests have been made in connection to this shooting, and police are looking for witnesses, Boston police commissioner William Gross told reporters at the scene.

With the help of the community, Gross said, the department hopes to make more arrests in the city’s homicide cases.

“When we work together, that’s sending a message as well that these senseless acts of violence won’t be tolerated,” Gross said.
