Florida man may have drowned in N.H. river, police say

A Florida man found face down in the Androscoggin River in Berlin, N.H., Saturday morning and who was later pronounced dead may have drowned, New Hampshire State Police said.

John Wells, 62, of Leesburg was camping along the river Friday night with friends, police said in a statement. A camper found him next to the campsite Saturday morning in 16 to 24 inches of water.

Alcohol impairment may be a contributing factor in the incident, which is under investigation, police said.

State Police’s Marine Patrol unit received a call reporting Wells around 7 a.m. The Berlin fire and rescue and police departments also responded.


State Police asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information about it to call 603-227-2117.
