Coast Guard searching for vessel off Barnstable Harbor

The Coast Guard responded to a mayday call Thursday afternoon from a vessel reportedly taking on water off Cape Cod, an official said.

The call was received around 2:30 p.m. from someone saying their boat was taking on water north of Barnstable Harbor, Petty Officer Andrew Barresi said.

The agency always tries to maintain contact with a vessel in distress. However, the person did not respond to the agency after placing the call, Barresi said.

“As soon as somebody calls, we start talking to them right away, and that’s how we help them, but in this case there was just one call and no follow up after that,” Barresi said.

Coast Guard crews and local public safety agencies were still searching the waters early Thursday evening near Buzzards Bay because that’s where the call appeared to come from, he said.

No further information about the vessel or its passengers was immediately available.
