Authorities are investigating after an explosion in a pair of manholes rocked a Melrose neighborhood Friday night, police said.

The incident happened at about 8 p.m. on Essex Street, between West Emerson and Vine streets, where “two manholes exploded within about 100 yards of each other,” Melrose police said in a statement. The explosion caused the cover to come off a third manhole on the street, police said.

No one was injured in the incident, the cause of which is under investigation, according to authorities. The blast did not cause any power outages, police said.

Essex Street was closed as National Grid made repairs Friday night, with police detouring vehicle traffic, authorities said. A message left with the utility was not immediately returned Friday night.
