Shoppers and diners in Burlington on Friday night got a big surprise.

A black bear was spotted roaming through the busy retail district along South, Second and Third avenues, between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. according to Burlington police.

Nearby is a Men’s Wearhouse store , a Border Cafe restaurant, and the AMC Burlington Cinema 10. The businesses are located off the Middlesex Turnpike and across from the Burlington Mall.

The bear did not injure anyone, nor did it damage any property. “From what we’re told, he should be hibernating soon,” Sergeant Bernie Schipelliti said.

He urged anybody who sees the bear “to stay away, not to provoke, not to try to get pictures, just go in the other direction,” he said.
