Bird sightings across the region
Recent bird sightings as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society:
Last week’s highlights included offshore sightings of 194 dovekies, 11 Atlantic puffins, 161 black-legged kittiwakes, and 34 Northern fulmars, as well as small flocks of evening grosbeaks spotted in Cohasset, Lexington, Littleton, Marshfield, Newton, Reading, Rockport, Sterling, and other communities across the state.
► Plum Island: At the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, sightings included two American white pelicans, 26 northern pintails, three ruddy ducks, two rough-legged hawks, 33 common redpolls, and three pine siskins.
► Salisbury: At Salisbury Beach State Reservation, a rough-legged hawk, a northern goshawk, and 40 common redpolls were spotted.
► Miscellaneous: Among sightings were an American woodcock in Post Office Square in downtown Boston, a thick-billed murre at Hodgkins Cove on Cape Ann in Gloucester, a hoary redpoll at the Pine Hill Road grasslands in Lancaster, a tufted duck on Long Pond on Nantucket, a common murre off Wollaston Beach in Quincy, and an American bittern at Belle Isle Marsh in Winthrop.
