Rain could be heavy at times in Boston, and some areas may see a little snow

The weather has been dry for the past 13 days, but that’s all coming to an end.

An area of low pressure in the mid-Atlantic region is going to move through New England, and there’s enough warm air in place that the bulk of the storm will fall as rain, including heavy rain later tonight.

If you’re traveling after 7 p.m. be aware there may be some briefly heavy downpours. This won’t be anything too terrible, but certainly take it slow.

As colder air works into the back of this system, the rain will eventually change to snow west of the coastline. These situations often end up with very little to no snow in Greater Boston, but the Berkshires and the northern parts of Worcester, Franklin and sometimes even Middlesex counties may experience a light accumulation.

I don’t expect this to turn into a significant event. But the morning commute Monday may be affected. It doesn’t take a lot of frozen precipitation to cause icy travel, and with temperatures falling towards freezing overnight and the precipitation still coming down, there could be issues north of the Interstate 495 belt and especially across Southern New Hampshire.

In Boston this will be mainly a rain event, although even in the city we could see a bit of snow or sleet at the end. Since it’s been mild this weekend, the roads are quite warm and temperatures several degrees under freezing would be necessary before we see anything accumulate on the roadways. Grassy surfaces could whiten with the snowfall. The best chance for accumulation and the need for road crews would be in the northern areas.

Behind the system a blast of cold air will arrive with temperatures on Tuesday at least 10 degrees below average. Readings will struggle towards the freezing mark and many places will never make it that high.

The dry weather will resume for several days before our next weather system strikes on Friday. This looks like a warm and windy system with rain showers.

An early look at Christmas shows cold but dry conditions. Remember this is a 10-day forecast, but the odds that there will be snow on the ground Christmas morning are rapidly shrinking.
