Westport used auto dealership and former owner to pay $450,000 for allegedly selling defective vehicles

A used car dealership in Westport and its owner will pay $450,000 to settle allegations it sold defective vehicles, the state Attorney General’s office said Monday.

F&R Auto Sales Inc. and its former owner, Francis Correiro, of Assonet, agreed in Bristol County Superior Court to pay $400,000 in restitution to hundreds of former customers, $50,000 in penalties, and another $50,000 in penalties if they violate the settlement, the office said in a statement.

Correiro is also required to notify the office if he ever participates in the sale of used vehicles again.

From 2012 until F&R Auto closed in 2016, the dealership and Correiro lied to more than 100 buyers that their vehicles were safe and reliable, prosecutors said. When consumers found issues with their vehicles, the dealership would often dismiss them or refuse to make repairs, they said.

F&R Auto and Correiro are also accused of failing to protect customers’ Social Security and financial account numbers and to provide titles or copies of appropriate documents for vehicle sales.

“This business and its owner cheated customers and threatened public safety by putting dangerous vehicles on the road,” prosecutors said.
