A female German shepherd was found dead on Sunday Jan. 6 in a parking lot in North Attleborough, the MSPCA-Angell said in a statement Wednesday.

The sable-colored dog was found lying on a sheet and comforter and was covered with a gray lightweight plastic tarp, according to the statement.

The dog, believed to be between 5 to 8 years old, was found in the parking lot of the Ruth Rhind Recreation Area, according to the statement.

North Attleborough police and the nonprofit animal rescue group are conducting an animal cruelty investigation into the death, the statement said.

North Attleborough police were not immediately available for comment Wednesday night.

Animal cruelty is a felony in Massachusetts, punishable by up to seven years in state prison and a fine of up to $5,000, according to the statement.
