Car crashes into Swansea funeral home, disrupting service
A 74-year-old woman was hospitalized with minor injuries after crashing her car into a Swansea funeral home Saturday morning, disrupting a service, officials said.
Swansea police responded to the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest on Gardners Neck Road at about 8:50 a.m., Sergeant Mark Foley said.
No one inside the funeral home was injured, he said.
The woman was backing into a parking space when she mistook the gas for the brake and accelerated over the curb and through the front doors of the building into the lobby, Foley said. The car hit a gas fireplace and broke a pipe, causing police to shut off the gas.
A funeral was taking place in another room, but when the car hit the fireplace it “lodged the whole wall into the next room” and disrupted the service, Foley said. He said other arrangements had to be made for the ceremony.
The crash remained under investigation Sunday night.
