Storm expected to bring snow early Monday morning

There’s little doubt that snow is coming for the early morning hours of Monday, and it’s going to accumulate enough that many areas will have to send out the plows.

This isn’t a major snowstorm, but we will be seeing enough snow that it will look quite wintry for the daytime tomorrow. There will likely be snow in the air from roughly midnight tonight all the way through the mid-to-late afternoon on Monday, but most of the accumulation is going to occur before 8 a.m. tomorrow.

Generally, I’m expecting between 1 and 3 inches across most of the area, but 2 to 5 inches is likely south of Boston. It’s not out of the question that a couple of spots will get close to 6 inches.

Temperatures are going to be cold enough that we shouldn’t have to contend with any freezing rain or sleet — certainly different than the past several storms. The snow will be wetter across the south coast and the southern part of Cape Cod.

The reason for the snow is a weak area of low pressure passing south of New England Monday morning will have an elongated area of low pressure back to its west, which will keep the snow in the air during the day tomorrow.

Temperatures will be only in the upper twenties to mid-thirties. As the storm moves out to sea, we’ll look for clearing skies to take place Monday night, setting us up for a cold wintry day on Tuesday. The dry weather will last into Wednesday before the next storm system sets its sights on southern New England.

This next storm looks to be a bit milder than the one tomorrow as snow will change over to a mixed bag of precipitation late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. I do expect there to be some accumulation before the changeover, but nothing too significant.

Tides are running astronomically high this week and there may be some minor coastal flooding on Wednesday or Thursday. The pattern is active with perhaps another storm of rain or snow next weekend. We’ll have to assess the flood risk as we get closer to March as that is another issue looming in the future.
