Car carrier overturns in Billerica, hits utility pole
A speeding 45-foot car carrier trailer overturned on slippery roads Thursday morning in Billerica, slamming into a utility pole, police said.
“As it was negotiating a turn on High Street, at a speed that was greater than reasonable for conditions, it tipped over and went on its side and down the snow embankment,” Billerica Deputy Police Chief Roy Frost said. No one was hurt.
Police received a call at 8:56 a.m. Thursday that a car carrier trailer attached to a pickup truck with three cars on it turned over near 444 High St., Frost said.
A photo from the scene shows the car carrier half in the snow and half in the road. Some 3.6 inches of snow fell Wednesday night in Billerica.
National Grid was on scene, Frost said. Information on possible outages was not immediately available.
“It doesn’t look like the wires came down, but there could be damage to the pole,” he said.
The driver was cited for an unsafe load and for his speed being unreasonably high, Frost said.
High Street was closed at Town Farm Lane and Mount Pleasant Street, with a detour at Billerica Avenue, Billerica police tweeted. The streets were still closed as of 10:20 a.m., Frost said.
The car carrier was operated by JE Transportation in Leominster, Frost said.
