A Cape Cod woman escaped serious injury on Monday after a turkey came crashing through her car’s windshield as she drove along a busy road in Sandwich, according to police.

Sandwich police said in a Facebook post that the driver was traveling east on Route 6A around 8:30 a.m. when her vehicle struck the turkey. The bird, police said, was crossing the road.

“The bird crashed through the windshield of the 2007 Kia Sportage, and passed between the driver and the unoccupied passenger seat,” police said in the post. “The bird continued through the passenger compartment, striking the rear tailgate of the vehicle.”

According to police, “solar glare” may have contributed to the early morning crash. They did not identify the driver or disclose how fast the car was traveling.

Police shared a picture of the vehicle on Facebook Monday afternoon. In the photo, a large hole is visible in the middle of the windshield, next to the driver’s seat.

While the driver, 43, sustained minor injuries from broken glass, the turkey died, police said.

The vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

In March of last year, State Police said a 30-year-old suffered minor injuries when a wild turkey flew into her windshield, shattering the glass, on Interstate 495 in Norton.
