Spencer officers hospitalized after exposure to ‘powdery’ substance

Three police officers in Spencer were taken to a local hospital after they were exposed to a white, powdery substance during a motor vehicle stop, the department said in a statement Thursday night.

Two officers became light-headed and dizzy after they were exposed, while a third was taken to the hospital as a precaution, police said.

The incident is being treated as a hazmat situation, according to authorities. It was not immediately clear where in the town the vehicle stop took place. Spencer is located in Central Massachusetts, about 11 miles west of Worcester.

Messages left with Spencer police and fire departments were not immediately returned late Thursday night.
