A water main break in Brighton on Wednesday afternoon has officials asking people to avoid the area.

The break in the 8-inch main occurred around 2 p.m. Wednesday on Arlington Street in Brighton near Delaware Place, Boston Water and Sewer Commission spokesman Stephen Mulloney said.

“The main is controlled, and our crews will be excavating soon,” he said.

Ten customers have no water, Mulloney said. The commission is still investigating the incident.

Boston police tweeted that motorists and pedestrians should avoid the area on Arlington Street between Market Street and Parsons Street.

No further information was immediately available.
