Man rescued from water off Winthrop
A 23-year-old man who tried to swim from a Winthrop beach to a Boston Harbor island Sunday evening was rescued from the water, according to the town’s assistant harbormaster.
Officials received a 911 call at 6:04 p.m. about a distressed person in the water. First responders found the man, who was not identified, about halfway to Snake Island, said Kevin Janielis, assistant harbormaster.
Snake Island is part of the Boston Harbor Islands, a national recreation area. The island is just a short distance off Winthrop.
The man planned to swim from Pico Beach to the island, and back again, Janielis said.
He was evaluated and then released, Janielis said.
“All secure, everyone is safe,” he said.
