Woman killed in West Warwick, R.I., crash
A woman was killed and five people, including two children, were injured in a head-on car crash in West Warwick, R.I., Saturday evening, according to police.
Ferial Alrifel, 70, a West Warwick resident, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, where the three injured adults were also taken, West Warwick police said in a press release.
The children were taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where one remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon and is expected to survive, according to police.
At about 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a crash near 717 Providence St., after one of the cars crossed the center line, sparking the crash, Captain Briand Ketcham, a police spokesman, said in a brief phone interview.
Police said all injuries initially appeared non-life threatening and that Alrifel’s cause of death had not been determined as of Sunday afternoon, police said. The child was the only victim who remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon.
Operator impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash and “it doesn’t look like there will be criminal charges,” Ketchum said.
The crash is under investigation, police said.
