June is Pride Month, and across New England various groups are holding celebrations for LGBTQ communities around the region.
This June marks the 50th anniversary of the police raid on New York City’s Stonewall Inn, a gay bar that became a rallying point for LGBTQ rights after patrons resisted police and launched several days of protest.
Boston held its first pride parade two years later, in 1971, and the city hosts its 49th annual parade and festival on Saturday as a part of a weeklong Pride celebration.
Cities including Lowell have already held Pride Month events, but here are some of the other celebrations happening around New England in the coming weeks.
Pride Portland (Portland, Maine)
From June 7 to June 16, Pride Portland will host 10 Days of Pride, with a parade and festival on Saturday, June 15 at Deering Oaks Park in Portland. The theme of the celebration is “Resist. Remember. Rejoice.” Pride Portland’s full schedule is available on the organization’s website.
Rhode Island PrideFest (Providence)
Rhode Island Pride hosts the self-proclaimed “only illuminated night Pride parade” in New England on Saturday, June 15, in Providence after PrideFest, a festival that begins at noon and includes food vendors, live music, and representatives from social resource organizations. The theme of the celebration is “Live Your Truth.”
Cape Cod Pride Festival (Hyannis)
Cape Cod Pride hosts its annual pride celebration on the Hyannis Village Green starting at noon on Saturday, June 22.
The event includes vendors, food trucks, a raffle, and a series of speakers, including state Senator Julian Cyr, who represents much of Cape Cod and the Islands.
Portsmouth Pride (Portsmouth, N.H.)
Seacoast Outright will put on its fifth annual pride celebration in Portsmouth, N.H., on Saturday, June 22. The celebration will include a marketplace and a parade through downtown Portsmouth to Strawbery Banke, which will play host to an entertainment program.
North Shore Pride (Salem, Mass.)
The 8th annual North Shore Pride Parade and Festival will be on June 22 in Salem. The theme will be “Stonewall 50: Looking Back Marching Forward” and the event will include a kick-off party on June 21.
The parade will lead to Salem Common, where the festival will feature various vendors.
Nashua Pride Festival (Nashua)
Nashua hosts a parade and celebration on Saturday, June 29, featuring entertainment, vendors, a drag show, and more.
The festivities will take place in downtown Nashua.
