Somewhat unsurprisingly, Boston Latin School was rated the top high school in the Boston area by US News & World Report, receiving top marks in a new list released Wednesday.

The new rankings, which list the best high schools by metropolitan area, is based on the Boston area as defined by the US Census, which apparently stretches as far north as Rochester, N.H., as far south as Plymouth, and as far west as Framingham and Marlborough.

Following Boston Latin School, the top five list in the Boston area was rounded out by the Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School in Marlborough, Lexington High School, Boston Latin Academy, and Hopkinton High School.

Meanwhile, in the Worcester metropolitan area, the top five schools were The Bromfield School in Harvard, Westborough High School, Nashoba Regional High School, Tahanto Regional High School in Boylston, and Algonquin Regional High School, according to US News & World Report.

The rankings were determined by weighing college readiness (30 percent), math and reading proficiency (20 percent), math and reading performance (20 percent), underserved student performance (10 percent), college curriculum breadth (10 percent), and graduation rate (10 percent).

US News & World Report released nationwide rankings of high school in April, but decided to also rate the schools regionally after requests from locals.

“We’ve heard from students, parents and school officials that they’re interested in seeing how their school compares with others in the community,” said Robert Morse, chief data strategist at US News in a statement. “With these new rankings, residents in more than 900 metro areas nationwide can see which local schools are succeeding at educating and graduating their students.”

Here’s a look at the complete list of rankings for the Boston and Worcester areas:
