A woman in her 60s died after being struck by a boom truck Tuesday morning while she was trying to cross the street near the Out of Town News stand in Harvard Square, officials said.

The woman’s name was not released.

The circumstances of the pedestrian fatality were under investigation by Cambridge police and Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office.

The crash happened next to the newsstand, in the area where Massachusetts Avenue meets Brattle Street, around 6:53 a.m., officials said. The woman was rushed to an area hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

Police closed off a section of Harvard Square for several hours while conducting an investigation.

“The preliminary investigation suggests that the decedent was struck by a boom truck while trying to cross the street, and that the decedent was not in a crosswalk. The operator of the boom truck remained on scene,” Ryan’s office said in a statement.

The statement said the investigation was “open and active” and also included State Police crash experts.

Last week, a Seekonk woman was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver who fled the scene; a woman was also fatally injured last week when she was hit by a vehicle in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood.

The driver in the Seekonk crash surrendered to authorities and is in custody. The driver in the Fort Point incident stayed at the scene, and no charges have been filed.
