Ribbon cutting for Somerville’s Lincoln Park renovation

Somerville is celebrating the completion of major renovations to Lincoln Park, at a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand reopening on Friday, July 20.

In addition to the ceremony, scheduled for 9 a.m., the free community event will include games, face painting, and music.

The $9.4 million project, which began last year after more than three years of planning, encompassed six separate coordinated projects to upgrade the 6.6-acre park.

The newly-seeded grass areas are not yet ready for use, but on Friday the other new and upgraded park features are set to open, including the playground, skate park, basketball courts, rain gardens, water sprays, off-leash dog area, circulation paths, fitness station, community gardens, pollinator garden, toddler area with sandbox, parkour area, and expansive decks with tables and chairs.

Also completed are a new 1.25 million gallon subsurface stormwater storage system and a recycled rainwater irrigation system.

The soccer field and the softball field will be fenced off and closed until the spring of 2019 to allow the grass to become established. Newly planted lawn areas will be fenced off and closed through this fall.
