Dedham’s governing board gets gender-neutral name

Dedham’s Board of Selectmen is no more; moving forward, the elected officials will be known as the “Select Board.”

Town Meeting voted on Nov. 26 to change the name, joining a growing number of communities opting for the gender-neutral designation.

Town Meeting also voted to ask the state Legislature to approve four additional restaurant/bar liquor licenses for Dedham: three in Legacy Place and one in Dedham Square.

Meeting members approved a bylaw that requires owners to keep their property in good repair or face fines or potential demolition if structures become so dilapidated that they are deemed a blight.

The most contentious decision of the night was a 135-to-69 vote to approve adding $700,000 to the Robin Reyes Fund to help pay for financing a new $45 million public safety building.

The project was approved a year ago, but the financing method was successfully challenged at the Spring 2018 Town Meeting. The latest vote restored the original financing scheme.
