EAST BOOTHBAY, Maine — Graham Shimmield, the executive director of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, a Maine oceanography center, died Dec. 24 at age 58.
Mr. Shimmield died after a battle with cancer, the laboratory said.
Mr. Shimmield led the Bigelow Laboratory for about nine years. Officials there said he transformed it by developing a new marine research and education campus in East Boothbay.
Bigelow, a private, nonprofit institution on the Maine coast, has almost doubled in size since Mr. Shimmield took over.
Mr. Shimmield also had a long career in science before coming to the laboratory. He published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and was a fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
