OAK BLUFFS — Peter Simon, a longtime photographer on Martha’s Vineyard, died Sunday. He was 71.

A family friend, Mirabai Bush, said Simon died of cardiac arrest at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He had also battled lung cancer.

Simon was the brother of singer Carly Simon, who also lives on the island.

Simon was working for the Martha’s Vineyard Times as a freelance photographer at the time of his death, the Times reported.

Simon spent his career photographing both celebrities on the island as well as everyday people.

In the spring he relaunched Vineyard Scenes, which featured photographs from local events and fundraisers.
