Fire hazard checks underway

The city has begun an initiative to reduce the risk of home fires in Everett. Under the program, which began earlier this month, the Fire Department’s prevention unit is traveling through the city’s neighborhoods inspecting residential properties. The teams look for hazards ranging from faulty wiring to illegal basement and attic apartments, and exterior conditions such as excess brush and trash, abandoned vehicles, and flammable fluids stored in containers. Fire officials also check for working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The teams can take enforcement action in response to violations of city codes. The initial sweep of inspections will cover every street in the city over the next five months. Meanwhile, economic development and job training will be the key topics at the Everett Chamber of Commerce’s annual breakfast Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at BNY Mellon, 135 Santilli Highway. The public is invited. For reservations, call 617-387-9100.
