Nomination papers for town election available Jan. 2

Residents interested in running in the 2013 annual town election can soon begin the task of getting their names on the ballot. Town clerk Amy Warfield said nomination papers for the April 6 election will be available in her office starting Jan. 2. Voters will fill 16 townwide seats in the election. Among them are two seats each on the Board of Selectmen and the School Committee. Also to be filled are the positions of town moderator and treasurer/collector; two seats apiece on the library trustees and Board of Health, one seat each on the Board of Assessors, Planning Board, Housing Authority, and Recreation Commission; and the First and Second constables. Voters will also cast ballots to elect 48 Town Meeting members, 42 of them to serve regular three-year terms and six to complete unexpired terms for vacant seats. Prospective candidates have until Feb. 14 to pick up nomination papers and Feb. 19 to file them. To earn a spot on the ballot, residents who would like to run for townwide office need 50 signatures, while those seeking a Town Meeting seat need 10 signatures from voters in their home precinct.
