UMass Lowell becomes Division 1 athletics school

University of Massachusetts Lowell athletic teams will be moving up to Division 1, joining the America East Conference as of July 1. America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen said the university exhibits the combination of strong academics, competitive athletics, and outstanding facilities shared by the other institutions in the conference, making them an exciting addition. UMass Lowell will begin competing in 14 sports during the 2013-2014 academic year, but will not be eligible for postseason play while the four-year NCAA reclassification process from Division 2 to Division 1 is completed. Currently, the university’s only Division 1 sport is men’s ice hockey.
