Towns receive grants for schools, energy

Hamilton and Wenham received two state grants last month for separate joint initiatives. The first, a Community Innovation Challenge grant for $30,000, will be used to study the towns’ plan for the shared Department of Public Facilities and Infrastructure (also called “a virtual DPW”), which would merge the resources of the two towns and the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District. The towns will also receive an unspecified grant to participate in the Community Energy Strategies Program, a $500,000 pilot program funded by the state’s Clean Energy Center and the state Department of Energy Resources Green Communities Division, which is geared to helping local communities “identify energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other clean energy strategies to meet local energy needs,” according to a state news release. “I think these collaborations, especially working together with Hamilton, are our future,” said Wenham Board of Selectman chairwoman Molly Martins. “We’re happy to be on the leading edge on energy efficiency and other initiatives.”
