Selectmen expand fire board

The Board of Selectmen has increased the size of the board of fire engineers from three to five. In a recent meeting, selectmen chose Mary Ann Fowler and Bob Janes to join current members Scott Berkenbush, who serves as chief engineer, and engineers Michael Dwyer and Mark Hemingway. Selectman chairman Bert Knowles abstained from voting, leaving the decision at 2-1, with Glenn Kemper and Dick Cushing in support. Knowles said he believed the town should adopt the state’s so-called “strong chief law,” which gives the fire chief sole control over operations, as well as hiring and firing, as opposed to answering to selectmen.
