StonehamBank is hosting a community shred day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 11 in the parking lot of its Billerica branch, 493 Boston Road. “While there are lots of documents we need to keep forever, certain ones can be destroyed — for instance, canceled checks, credit card statements, and old bank statements can be tossed after seven years,” StonehamBank marketing officer Joshua Mahoney said in a written statement. “But papers like these should never be just thrown away. We encourage people to destroy any sensitive documents that are no longer needed to reduce the risk of identity theft. StonehamBank’s Shred Day is a quick and easy way for folks to deal with handling of such documents, using an environmentally conscious approach.” Once the papers are shredded, they are recycled on-site by Shred-it, a company that specializes in document destruction, using an industrial grade shredder. To further promote going green, StonehamBank employees will be on hand to educate customers about electronic statement options. During the Shred Day event, StonehamBank will collect nonperishable grocery items, paper products, laundry detergent, toiletries, and diapers in larger sizes. The items will be donated to the Billerica food pantry. For more information, call 1-888-402-2265 or visit www.stonehambank.com .
