Sharps collection on Saturday

The Andover Health Department and the town’s Department of Public Works, in collaboration with the Andover Police Department, are scheduled to collect sharps from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at West Elementary School, 58 Beacon St. Sharps disposal programs provide residents an opportunity to safely dispose of needles, syringes, and other sharp medical instruments. Since July 1, 2012, it has been illegal under state medical waste regulations established by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to dispose of sharps in household trash. Used sharps can cause injury and spread blood-borne diseases, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. Residents are urged to place used sharps in a sharps container, and to store the closed container away from children and pets. The containers may be safely deposited in sharps collection kiosks. For more information, contact the Andover Health Department at 978-623-8299. This sharps collection is being held as part of the town’s monthlong celebration of National Public Health Week. Other Andover events include a public health display and information table at Memorial Hall Library, 2 North Main St., and walk-in blood pressure screenings from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Center at Punchard (Andover’s senior center), 30 Whittier Court.
