Taxi owners address road rules

License renewals for seven taxi and livery companies in the city were delayed recently until their owners spoke with city councilors about concerns involving courtesy and rules of the road. The action was driven, they said, by constituent reports of loud horn-beeping when summoning customers, running stop signs, passing stopped school buses, and gathering together to idle in neighborhoods. Councilor Sandy Almonte supported the move, saying she had personally experienced rude words and gestures after suggesting that two cab drivers were holding up traffic while chatting. She planned to draw up an agreement to be signed by the owners of the seven companies in question. There are 10 taxi and livery companies licensed in Lawrence, employing more than 400 drivers.
