Dracut override question is hot topic

A $2.9 million override proposed by the School Committee to fund the district’s operational budget was the hot topic at a recent candidates night. Candidates running for School Committee seats, as well as those in the selectmen’s race, voiced differing opinions on the Proposition 2½ override, which would result in a tax increase of approximately $300 annually for residents. While all School Committee candidates and all three challengers in the selectmen’s race expressed support for the measure, both incumbent selectmen raised concerns about putting the financial burden on residents in a town whose unemployment rate is still high. Following Town Meeting in June, the issue will be voted on in a special election in July.
