Alderman Robert Van Campen to run for mayor

Ward 5 Alderman Robert Van Campen is running for mayor this year. Van Campen, who is completing his sixth term as alderman after a term as the Ward 5 representative on the Common Council, declared his candidacy for mayor in a written statement. Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. recently made public his plans to seek a fourth term. Van Campen, who works as city solicitor in Melrose, was president of the aldermen in 2004, 2008, and 2010. In his announcement, he promised to bring new leadership to a city he contended has been beset by an exploding budget, substantial tax increases, plummeting housing values, and escalating gang and drug activity. “Over the next several months, I will present a new vision — a better vision — of how to move our city forward and make the city of Everett the vibrant community its residents and business owners deserve,” he said.
