Community groups work to shelter homeless

Community Teamwork Inc. and the Lowell Transitional Living Center are working to find shelter and services for about a dozen homeless residents who have been living in makeshift camps within the city. In a unanimous decision, the Lowell City Council recently voted to remove tents and other shelters that have gone up near the Hunts Falls Bridge and along Beaver Brook by the Aiken Street Bridge and University Avenue. Displaced camp residents can have their personal belongings stored at a shelter, and they are being offered assistance and funding to find legal housing. The move came after some constituents voiced concerns over seeing fires in the three areas, as well as the potential for crime and sanitation issues.
