Chelsea park to be named after boxer

The City Council recently voted to name a planned new park after John Ruiz, the retired two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion who grew up and still lives in Chelsea. The unanimous vote came on the recommendation of City Manager Jay Ash. “I’ve been looking for a long time for a way to recognize John for his professional accomplishments, and also what he’s meant to the community,” Ash said. “John’s nickname is the ‘The Quiet Man.’ He’s not only quiet but he’s humble. Even when he was enjoying unparalleled success in the boxing world he was still active in youth sports and being a great citizen of Chelsea.” The park is being constructed on the site of a former auto repair shop at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Bloomingdale Street that the city acquired through tax title. Now in design, the project is set to begin this fall and to be completed in June 2014.
