City Hall relocation under discussion

Officials in Malden are seeking more options as they look to relocate City Hall. At the recommendation of Mayor Gary Christenson, the City Council issued a request for proposals Tuesday, seeking draft plans to redevelop a city-owned parking lot into a new 30,000-square-foot city hall, as well as proposals on privately owned land that could be purchased by the city. The city previously sought proposals for parcels that would be leased, rather than bought. But in a recent council meeting, Christenson said he no longer supported that approach. Relocating Malden Government Center from its current perch on Pleasant Street, demolishing the building, and reconnecting the street has been a priority of Christenson’s since he was elected in 2011.
