Mayor names director for health program

Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. recently named Valerie Spain as the new director of Energize Everett, a city program that encourages residents to exercise and follow a healthy diet. Spain had been consulting for the program since March. She fills the position formerly held by Kathleen O’Brien, who resigned several months ago to pursue a graduate degree. Spain brings 13 years of experience in health communications, education consulting, and community affairs. Most recently, she worked as operations manager in the community affairs department of Cambridge Health Alliance — whose network includes Whidden Hospital in Everett. A native of Philadelphia, she now lives in Cambridge.
