Unanimous approval allows farm animal housing

Following unanimous City Council approval, the city Law Department is drafting an ordinance that would allow farm animals on residential properties. The effort was first promoted by the Lowell Backyard Chicken Group, residents advocating for the right to keep chickens as a source of fresh eggs for their families. If the ordinance passes, restrictions would be included to keep the number of hens under a certain limit, to dictate hen house sizes and locations with relation to abutting properties, and to ban roosters to avoid noise issues. Opponents cite health concerns and the risk of overburdening the city’s inspectors with additional responsibility.
